From Farm to School

Back to School Night at Cascade Middle School was fun and insightful. Carlos and I joined what felt like millions of parents in the gym to get the beginning of the year info from the principal.  After a review of last year’s test statistics and this year’s goals, we were set free to Max’s first period.  For an hour, we followed Max’s daily schedule.  Each class was about 5 min with 3 min passing periods.  We even went to the cafeteria to sample some of the school food which was actually really, really good!  Chicken Poppy Salad, fresh veggies, and fruit were served by a super sweet cafeteria lady.  It was such a difference from my middle school days!  Gone are the days of cardboard frozen pizza and mystery meat sandwiches.  Clam chowder in bread bowls, baked beef ziti, terriyaki chicken and brown rice, chili, hummus, black bean burgers, hamburger bar, and spaghetti bar are just a few items on the menu. The kids have many, many choices healthy choices.  With each main meal, there is a side of fruits and vegetables.  All of the fruits and veggies are from local growers, and the beef is from local farms.  Carlos and I were really impressed and happily surprised!  Way to go nutrition services.

Here are some highlights from the brochure.

– whole wheat and grains are used

-trans-fats have been eliminated

-low-fat cheese and milk

-only fruits and veggie can be “super sized”

-breads are baked at the high school

– ooooh they even have a panini machine!

Now to get them composting with Red Wigglers!

Spin Kitchen

So happy to share the news!  My sweet friend, Kristin Davis, is running her own baking company, Spin Kitchen.  After a few years of battling food issues, she decided to get down to business and find out what was going on inside her body!  She recently had some serious tests done and discovered she had to make a change with her menu.  Not happy with the food alternatives in the stores, she ventured out, bought some cookbooks and began baking delicious goods.  Her goods are free of a lot of “stuff”…. gluten free and dairy free are on the top of the list.  There’s nothing artificial, and I can pronounce the ingredients! (lol) I am so lucky to be her friend because I get to taste test a lot of the baked goods! I love that Kristin tweaks the recipes and adds her own twist.  She’s not afraid to try something different and is always open to suggestions! I am so happy for her!  She will rock the Bend baking scene!

She also has a Wonder Worman Worm bin filled with wigglers!  Of course these wigglers will be munching on her fruit and veggie scraps.  Oh to be a worm in a test kitchen!

Sweet Love

Love, pure love!  My kids loving their grandma and their grandma loving my kids!  Carlos snapped this on Easter before we feasted on dinner and after we devoured amazing cinnamon rolls.

I’ve never made cinnamon rolls but got the urge when I woke up at 5! My kids love cinnamon rolls from Nancy P’s, a local bakery in Bend, but I wasn’t sure if they were going to be open.  So I got my butt out of bed, did some research, and found this awesome recipe! Real ingredients, real rich, real high caloric ingredients but real ingredients!  I am a fan of the real stuff, the natural stuff, the good stuff.

They were so delicious! I will be making these again.

The egg shells were dried, pulverized and fed to the Red Wigglers!

Happy Earth Day

Little a’s class made these flowers a few years ago for Earth Day!  Can you find the one she made?  Hint: She loves, loves, loves orange. Yup, the pretty one in the middle.

Blooming flowers are just one piece of nature that floods my mind when I think of Earth Day.

-rivers, lakes, oceans

-cliffs, canyons, boulders

-eagles, deer, rabbits

-flowers, grass, sand

Nature in it’s pure form.  Untouched by “us”.

Please give thanks to Mother Earth for all that she provides to us.  It’s a good day for me to reflect on my needs and my wants. I don’t need 10 pairs of shoes, I don’t need 10 jackets, I don’t need 20 pants, etc, etc, etc!  I just need to slow down, sit and realize all that I have and then I’ll realize all that I need.

Total Fail…Lazy and sick fail!

What a day!  What a past 4 days!  What a past 2 weeks!  My chest is infested with germs…icky, sticky, slimy germs.  This all started last week after subbing at a preschool for 2 weeks (will save that for a later post).  The sweet little kids gave me hugs and smiles and also passed along their germs.  I started to get the sick feeling on Wed but pushed myself through it.  The tingling in my throat went away, and my head started to clear up. I thought for sure I was on the mends and was able to start the Spring Break festivities with the kids. On the agenda for the next four days, Snowboarding Camp from 10-3!  This was my excuse to hit the powder.  But on the second day, I started to get an annoying tickle in my throat.  Kinda felt like something was rubbing on the back of my throat.  I thought once again that I will push through this, too.  I actually don’t think I ever pushed through the first round. After 2 days of uncontrollable coughing and night time coughing into the pillow so I wouldn’t wake Carlos, Carlos decided to call the doctor!  (Guess the pillow didn’t work!)

My appointment was at 4:30…diagnosis…Bronchitis.  I had two prescriptions in hand and was off to Safeway. I asked the doctor to give me some meds that will knock me out and cease the cough!  I love meds like that and can’t wait to take it soooon!  So I’d like to share what came home with me.

The title of my post is Total Fail….Lazy and sick fail!  I am sure you can see from the picture why it has this title!  If not, here’s a clue!

Here are the plastic bags in the car next to………my recycled bags!  I realized I didn’t have them about half way though the parking lot!  Normally, I would have returned to the car to get them, but …DANG!  I was just tooooo DANG lazy!  and tooooo sick…more lazy than sick actually! I limited my shopping list so I wouldn’t be using too many plastic bags.  Any way, I wanted to share my fail with you!  not sure why…..hmmm!

Ways to use the plastic bags:

Bring them back to the store and recycle them there…

Use them to pick up the dog poop

What do you use yours for????

hmmmm….

Oh where, oh where has the Worman gone? oh where, oh where can she be?

I am hooked!   Mt Bachelor once again has stolen my mind, body and blogging soul.  He has taken all of the wigglin’ out of me.  I can’t focus on writing a worman post because whenever he’s covered with freshies I’ve gotta get my share.  So for the past 2 days, I’ve been riding with the kids, riding with friends, riding with Carlos and riding solo.

I will get back to work soon.  I promise.  Maybe tomorrow when I am up there, I will find some wigglin’ inspiration!
